91Թ Center for Faculty Development (CFD) recently hosted an interactive four-workshop series for faculty and staff centered on artificial intelligence and its implications for higher education.

The workshops, led by distinguished scholar Dr. José Antonio Bowen, author of 91ԹTeaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning,91Թ are part of university-wide efforts to support faculty in determining how, when and why AI should or should not be used.

Bowen led curriculum-focused workshops designed to immerse higher education professionals in practical lessons on AI tools and capabilities. Participants explored strategies for using AI in the classroom, including designing assignments that support student-centered teaching and learning. Bowen also addressed how high-impact practices can elevate the ethical and responsible use of AI while prompting critical and creative thinking.

91ԹMy hope is that faculty and staff left inspired and empowered to utilize AI in ways that enhance the work students are already doing in their courses. Through this hands-on workshop, faculty should have gained a better understanding of tangible ways AI could be integrated in their content areas, as well as assessment and assignment strategies that use AI thoughtfully and responsibly,91Թ said Dr. Ashley Allen, CFD director.

Bowen has won teaching awards at Stanford and Georgetown, served as a dean at Miami University and Southern Methodist University, and is a former president of Goucher College. He has written more than 100 scholarly articles and was awarded the Ernest L. Boyer Award for contributions to higher education in 2018. He is a senior fellow for the American Association of Colleges and Universities and consults for a range of Fortune 500 companies.

The Center for Faculty Development91Թ ongoing commitment to working with industry leaders and 91Թ decision-makers supports the thoughtful implementation of evolving technologies. The CFD is leading faculty cohorts through an AI in Higher Education Endorsement from the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) and has spearheaded faculty research related to AI in teaching and learning.

The CFD has collaborated with the AI Task Force, a 91Թ team of faculty and staff founded in spring 2023, to provide programs that support professional development related to AI tools, explore the implications of AI in higher education and build strategies for assignment and course design in response to the proliferation of AI technologies.
