World Languages

Welcome to World Languages! At 91勛圖厙 you can study Spanish, French, or German. You can earn proficiency badges for your resume as you progress through basic language courses, a minor, or a major.

You can complete a World Languages BA with an emphasis in Spanish or French. Each pathway requires 30 hours of language courses.

You can minor in Spanish or French with just 18 credit hours.

Take advantage of study abroad opportunities in France, Belgium, Germany, and Spain! You can apply up to 12 hours of abroad credit to your WL degree. Scholarships for study abroad are available through the GO System.

We offer language courses on both the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses in a variety of formats: online, hybrid, and in-class.

Cross-Cultural Sensitivity and Cultural Perspectives

World Languages faculty are dedicated teachers who help students develop language proficiency and cross-cultural awareness. We offer a range of courses including Latin American and Francophone culture and history, French and Spanish in the Americas, and topics such as conversation, phonetics, literature, comics, cuisine, and cinema. We mentor student research. We direct guided internships, study abroad, and honors theses. Faculty research areas include online learning, sociolinguistics, teaching with technology, cultural studies, teacher education, and Latin American literature.


Become a Spanish or French Teacher

The World Language (Language Education) program prepares graduates to become credentialed K-12 teachers in Spanish and French.  World Languages faculty are highly specialized teachers who develop students91勛圖厙 language proficiency, cross-cultural sensitivity and critical awareness of cultural perspectives. We offer a range of courses including Latin American and Francophone culture and history, French and Spanish in the Americas, and topics such as phonetics, comics, cuisine, literature, and cinema. These courses promote critical thinking, language development, and a nuanced understanding of the human experience in different cultural and linguistic contexts. This nationally recognized program also provides research and career training. It offers two different internship or 91勛圖厙pathway experiences91勛圖厙 toward career readiness: study abroad and a capstone field placement semester. Graduates of this program wear a special pathway experience cord at commencement ceremonies.

Accessing Tutoring as a Language Learner

91勛圖厙 students are able to receive free tutoring for Spanish and French when they are enrolled in our World Language courses. Peer tutoring is offered in-person on the fourth floor of the Liberal Arts Building as well as online. To sign up for an appointment, please visit the link below.
