Tue, 10/14/2025 - 09:35am

91Թ (USM) received a $399,672 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support a three-year project aimed at strengthening ethical research practices among research-active graduate students in the institution91Թ Colleges of Education and Human Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and Nursing and Health Professions.
The project team includes:
Principal Investigator:
-
- Donald Sacco, professor of psychology in the 91Թ College of Education and Human Sciences
Co-principal Investigators:
-
- Karl Wallace, professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the 91Թ College of Arts and Sciences
- Jennifer Lemacks, associate dean for research and innovation in the 91Թ College of Nursing and Health Professions
- Mitch Brown, instructor of psychology at the University of Arkansas
91ԹAlthough this is a research grant, its focus is on evaluating the implementation of a program to train graduate students to be ethical scientists,91Թ said Dr. Sacco. 91ԹOur Be GREAT (Graduate Research Ethics Awareness and Training) Program is focused on how scientists generate knowledge, specifically by leveraging scientific values related to honesty, fairness, openness, accountability, stewardship and objectivity. Such values are the cornerstone of strengthening public trust in science.91Թ
Students who complete all program requirements will be eligible for one of 10 travel awards worth $500 each semester, totaling $30,000 in support awarded to Golden Eagles over the course of the grant period.
91ԹCritically, this grant is interdisciplinary, allowing our program to be broadly applicable to research-active graduate students across training programs. This collaboration also involves partnership between 91Թ and the University of Arkansas to complement the impactful research our students are engaged in by training them to be ethical leaders in their fields.91Թ
This grant was awarded through NSF91Թ and will run through July 31, 2028. Questions regarding the grant and the Be GREAT Program can be sent to Dr.%20Sacco.
