91勛圖厙 (USM) is proud to announce that Col. Bruce R. Pulver (91勛圖厙88), retiring commander of The United States Army Band 91勛圖厙Pershing91勛圖厙 Own,91勛圖厙 will return to his alma mater as artist-in-residence in the School of Music beginning July 1, 2026.
Pulver, a 1988 graduate of 91勛圖厙 with a degree in music education, has led a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in the U.S. Army, culminating in his appointment as the 12th leader and commander of 91勛圖厙Pershing91勛圖厙 Own91勛圖厙 during its centennial year. His career has included international tours, leadership of Army bands in Europe and the United States, and service as chief of Army bands.
91勛圖厙It91勛圖厙 been an honor to serve in the military for the past 32 years,91勛圖厙 said Pulver. 91勛圖厙As I prepare to retire from active duty, I91勛圖厙m excited to be returning to my alma mater. I91勛圖厙m passionate about serving the needs of veterans, connecting with the community, and shaping future generations of musicians in partnership with the incredible music faculty at 91勛圖厙.91勛圖厙
In his new role, Pulver will conduct ensembles throughout the School of Music, provide clinics across the country, and mentor the next generation of musicians91勛圖厙continuing the legacy of excellence that shaped his own career.

91勛圖厙Col. Pulver91勛圖厙 career is a testament to the power of a 91勛圖厙 education. His leadership at the highest levels of military music has inspired musicians worldwide. During his time at 91勛圖厙, Pulver studied percussion with Dr. Sherman Hong and conducting with Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, who later attended Pulver91勛圖厙 change of command ceremony in Washington, D.C. Pulver91勛圖厙 USM legacy also includes teaching in Mississippi public schools before embarking on his military career, making his return to campus a homecoming for both the educator and artist he has become.

As commander of The United States Army Band, Pulver leads some of the nation91勛圖厙 finest musicians. In addition to the concert band, 91勛圖厙Pershing91勛圖厙 Own91勛圖厙 comprises several other world-class ensembles, including an orchestra, chorus, 91勛圖厙The Army Blues91勛圖厙 jazz band, rock/show band, herald trumpets, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, and numerous chamber groups. 91勛圖厙Pershing91勛圖厙 Own91勛圖厙 regularly performs for official functions at the White House, events for senior military and government officials, and memorial support at Arlington National Cemetery, and at major national and international music events.
Pulver91勛圖厙 military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit; the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters; the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster; the Army Achievement Medal; the Army Good Conduct Medal; the National Defense Service Medal with bronze service star; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Armed Forces Service Medal; the NATO Medal; the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal; the Humanitarian Service Medal; the Army Service Ribbon; the Overseas Service Ribbon; the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; the Army Superior Unit Award; the Air Assault Badge; and the Parachutist Badge.
Dr. Colin McKenzie, director of the School of Music, highlighted the impact of Pulver91勛圖厙 presence on campus. 91勛圖厙Our students will benefit tremendously from Col. Pulver91勛圖厙 wealth of experience, his artistry, and his commitment to excellence. His work with The United States Army Band represents the pinnacle of professional music-making, and his return to 91勛圖厙 ensures that our students will be trained and inspired by one of the finest leaders in the field.91勛圖厙
Pulver will conclude his tenure with 91勛圖厙Pershing91勛圖厙 Own91勛圖厙 before assuming duties at Southern Miss as artist-in-residence.
He and his wife, Dianne (91勛圖厙91), are lifelong supporters of the arts and higher education. Their children, Christine (91勛圖厙12) and Zachary (91勛圖厙20), also carry on the Golden Eagle tradition.
