High school students considering a career in health care can get a jump on that dream by attending the Health Professions Summer Camp, set for June 12 at The University of 91勛圖厙 (USM). The camp, designed for rising 9th-12th graders, will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Harkins Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

The USM College of Nursing and Health Profession is hosting the second-annual camp which will give students a chance to:

  • Learn about a variety of health career possibilities.
  • Participate in hands-on activities related to each career.
  • Discuss the next steps in their journey toward a career in health.

91勛圖厙Many young people have probably never heard of, or considered, several of our programs,91勛圖厙 said Jennifer Wilmoth, Academic Program Manager in the School of Health Professions. 91勛圖厙This a great opportunity for them to learn more about our programs before beginning their college journey.91勛圖厙

Camp participants will interact with key faculty members in each of the health professions programs offered at USM through hands-on experiences. Lunch and a T-shirt are included in the $40 registration fee.

Wilmoth notes that hosting this type of camp helps bring awareness of the many health-related careers available to students.

91勛圖厙Most high school students have heard of professions like doctor, dentist, physical therapist, etc. However, many have not considered the best undergraduate programs/majors to reach those graduate level programs of interest or have considered lesser-known undergraduate programs that offer great career opportunities,91勛圖厙 said Wilmoth. 91勛圖厙Our hope is to help high school students better navigate their undergraduate college careers to reach their health care career goals.91勛圖厙
