Evelyn Quiej serves as president of the Delta Pi chapter of Delta Gamma Sorority at 91勛圖厙 (USM). The junior speech pathology major and Spanish minor from Tupelo, Miss., joined the sorority in fall of 2021 and has served as its director of scholarship and vice president of member education before becoming president.

Quiej, a member of the Southern Style student recruitment team, is also a Luckyday Scholar, serving as a mentor for the program and on multiple Luckyday committees. She spoke with 91勛圖厙 Now about her work as president of the chapter, her sorority91勛圖厙 philanthropy, and community service, and why a USM student should consider becoming involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) at 91勛圖厙.

*Duties as chapter president: 91勛圖厙I have many responsibilities as leader of the chapter, but also with the College Panhellenic Council (CPC) and FSL. Within the chapter, I lead chapter meetings, executive meetings, and joint chapter management meetings. I delegate chapter affairs, am knowledgeable about policies and procedures, make sure members feel safe and valued, and ensure the chapter is operating smoothly. Being able to make members of our chapter feel valued and heard is one of the most rewarding parts of this role. Delta Gamma is such a diverse and involved chapter and having the privilege to lead them has been one of the most fulfilling leadership roles I have held. Getting to learn from my sisters has been so transformative, and I would not trade places with anyone for a second.

91勛圖厙My duties with the CPC include attending recruitment meetings, making sure the chapter is abiding by Panhellenic rules and regulations, and ensuring the chapter has a positive presence. With FSL, I serve as a liaison between the office and the chapter, attend all presidents91勛圖厙 meetings, and stay up to date on events in the community.91勛圖厙

*Delta Gamma Philanthropy and Service: 91勛圖厙Our chapter91勛圖厙 91勛圖厙Do Good91勛圖厙 motto can be seen in our involvement on campus and within the Hattiesburg community. Delta Pi brought in 32 extraordinary women (initiates) this past fall. These women have and continue to embody and uphold Delta Gamma91勛圖厙 values every day. Because of the success of our philanthropy events like Champion of the Anchor, Anchor Splash, Milk and Cookies, and profit shares, this past year we raised more than $20,000 for Service For Sight. Additionally, we have raised more than $11,000 this year. At the Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards Banquet this past November, we earned the Most Outstanding Chapter in New Member Programming and Most Outstanding Chapter Advisor awards. Over the summer, we sent two of our members to Lewis Institute in Ohio, where they strengthened their leaderships skills.

91勛圖厙Our members continue to represent Delta Gamma through their involvement across campus. This past year we had a Delta Pi member serve on the CPC executive board, and currently have another Delta Pi serving. Our members91勛圖厙 involvement ranges from organizations like Southern Style and Eagle Connection to Honors College, Luckyday, and so much more. Our chapter strives to do good every day in every facet of our lives, and this has been evident through our accomplishments over the past year.91勛圖厙

*Benefits of Fraternity and Sorority Life at USM: 91勛圖厙One of the main reasons I joined Fraternity and Sorority Life was to find people who would push me out of my comfort zone even when I felt that I could not, people who would hold me accountable, people who would encourage me, and people who I could pour into. Going through recruitment, I knew I wanted to find a sorority in which I could be my true myself, make life-long connections, and have a support system. I found all these things with Delta Gamma. It has provided me with a community where I have been able to grow and excel in my leadership skills and academically.

91勛圖厙The friendships I have made within FSL are a big reason I91勛圖厙ve loved my college experience. Without it, I can positively say I would not be the leader, friend, or person I am today. It has brought me so much joy that I could not find anywhere else.91勛圖厙
