What Is Active Listening?

Active listening is a communication technique where the listener focuses intently on the speaker, both verbally and nonverbally, to understand their message fully, not just the words, but the intent and emotions behind them. It involves showing genuine interest, asking clarifying questions, and avoiding distractions to ensure the speaker feels heard and understood.

Why Does It Matter in Mentoring?

  • Builds rapport and psychological safety
  • Helps uncover mentees' needs, values, and goals
  • Reduces misunderstandings
  • Encourages more open and honest dialogue
  • Models respectful communication

Key Aspects of Active Listening

  1. Be Present 91勛圖厙 Give your full attention. Put distractions away and focus on the person in front of you.
  2. Non-Verbal Cues 91勛圖厙 Watch for facial expressions, tone, and body language. They speak volumes.
  3. Verbal Cues 91勛圖厙 Nod, use short responses (91勛圖厙I see,91勛圖厙 91勛圖厙Go on91勛圖厙), and reflect back on what you hear.
  4. Open-Ended Questions: Get curious, not closed 91勛圖厙 Use questions that let them expand, not just say yes or no. A good example of an open-ended question would be: What91勛圖厙 been the most challenging part of that for you? to invite more discussion.
  5. Check for Clarity 91勛圖厙 Paraphrase or summarize to make sure you91勛圖厙re really getting it.
  6. Avoid Interruptions 91勛圖厙 Resist the urge to jump in. Give space for your mentee to convey their full thought.
  7. Withholding Judgment 91勛圖厙 Stay curious, not critical. Listen to understand, not to fix- unless that is being requested.
  8. Listen for both the message and the meaning 91勛圖厙 Try to understand what they91勛圖厙re really saying91勛圖厙beyond just words.
